[SW칼럼] 한국의 육상! 뜻이 있으면 반드시 성공한다 기사입력 2015-05-05 15:39 카리브해 연안의 섬나라 자메이카는 1인당 국민소득은 8000달러 정도로 면적은 남한의 10분의1, 인구는 280만명에 불과한 미약한 국가다. 인구의 90% 이상이 사탕수수, 코코아, 커피 농장에서 일했던 아프리카 노예의 후손인 흑인이다. 제국주의 시절 아프리카에서 강제로 이주당한 흑인노예의 집결지로서 인류학적으로 아픔의 역사가 깃든 곳이다. 전세계인들이 자메이카를 생각하면 떠오르는 사람이 있다. 바로 세계 단거리 육상의 아이콘 우사인 볼트다. 볼트는 2009년 세계육상선수권대회에서 남자 100m에서 마의 벽이라는 9초60을 깨고 9초58로 세계신기록을 세웠다. 자메이카에는 볼트만 있는 것이 아니다. 2008년 베이징올림픽에서 볼트와 프레이저는 각각 남자 100m, 여자 100m에서 우승을 함으로써 육상강국 미국의 콧대를 꺾어버렸다. 세계사에서 존재감 없는 작은 나라가 육상종목에서만큼은 절대적 강자가 된 것이다. 그럼 자메이카보다 모든 면에서 월등한 우리 대한민국의 육상의 현실은 어떠한가. 1992년 마라토너 황영조, 이봉주 선수 이후 뚜렷한 선수가 안 보였다. 그러나 동트기 전 새벽이 제일 어두운 법. 시련의 시기를 지나 우리 육상에도 빛이 보인다. 지난 2월 27일 13대 한국대학육상경기연맹의 제13대 회장으로 박용학 회장이 추대된 이후 첫 번째 대회를 지난달 예천 공설운동장에서 개최했다. 이번 대회는 광주유니버시아드대회 선발전 겸 제70회 전국대학육상경기선수권대회와 19회 전국실업육상경기선수권대회가 공동으로 진행 됐다. 한국실업육상연맹의 최경열 수석부회장은 선수층이 엷은 우리 육상현실에서 대학연맹과 함께 육상의 저변확대를 위해 앞으로 공동으로 경기를 주최하기로 한 것이다. 이에 앞서 열린 대학연맹 이사회에서 박용학 회장은 7월에 열리는 광주유니버시드대회에 연맹 소속 선수들이 최대한 많이 출전하도록 하겠다고 밝혔다. 또 교대대항전에 이어 명년부터는 비등록 일반학생대회 개최, 동계 해외전지훈련 및 지도자 연수 등 비전을 제시해 육상인들로부터 찬사를 받았다. 특히 전지훈련과 지도자연수는 중국 상하이체육센터를 염두에 두고 있는데, 상하이체육센터는 전천후 실내훈련장으로서 올림픽과 세계선수권대회까지 치룬 우리 육상계의 현실로서는 부러움의 대상인 훈련지이다. 세계적인 육상스타 류시앙이 훈련하고 있는 곳이다. 이것은 상하이 체육국과 박회장의 깊은 인연이 있었기에 가능한 일이다. 경기를 치룬 예천군 이현준 군수는 한국중·고등학교양궁연맹회장으로서 우리나라 체육을 사랑하는 분이다. 특히 대한민국의 육상현실을 안타까워하며 최인혜 예천여고 교사와 함께 상하이, 베이징, 도쿄에 있는 육상경기 시설을 견학했다. 현재 6레인으로 구성된 예천실내육상경기장을 200m 트랙의 정규 육상경기장으로 확장해 명년 7월에 완공 예정이다. 그러면 육상 전 종목의 전천후 훈련이 가능해 진다. 이현준 군수는 예천을 한국육상의 메카로 만들겠다고 한다. ‘유지자사경성(有志者事竟成 : 뜻이 있는 자는 반드시 성공한다)’이라는 말이 있다. 우리 육상은 반드시 일어날 것이다. 유범진 한국환경체육청소년연맹 이사장, 칼럼니스트 |
